Notes on the Saxon implementation

Available since Saxon 9.4, provided XPath 3.0 is enabled.

The Saxon implementation is by default not deterministic: if the function is called twice with the same argument, it will read the external file twice, and may return different results if it has changed. If stable results are required, this can be achieved (from 9.8) by setting the configuration option FeatureKeys.STABLE_UNPARSED_TEXT. This makes the function much less efficient, since the entire file has to be read into memory and retained in memory just in case the same file is read again.
